United Nations Security Council Resolution 1475
**United Nations Security Council Resolution 1475**
=============================================
**Adoption**
------------
Resolution 1475 of the United Nations Security Council was adopted unanimously on 14 April 2003.
**Background**
-------------
The resolution reaffirmed all previous resolutions related to the situation in Cyprus, particularly **Resolution 1250 (1999)**. The Council expressed regret that an agreement on a settlement plan for the country had not been reached due to the "negative approach" of the Turkish Cypriot leadership.
**Settlement Plan**
-----------------
The resolution reiterated the importance of achieving a comprehensive political settlement in Cyprus. It commended Secretary-General Kofi Annan for using his initiative to present a settlement plan aimed at reducing differences between the Republic of Cyprus and Northern Cyprus.
**Regrettable Approach**
----------------------
The Council expressed regret at the approach of the Turkish Cypriot leadership, which had delayed reaching an agreement on a plan for holding simultaneous referendums. This would have deprived Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots of the opportunity to determine their own fate, with no outcome expected before 16 April 2003, when Cyprus was scheduled to join the European Union.
