United Nations Security Council Resolution 1642

Adoption and Mandate Extension

United Nations Security Council Resolution 1642 was adopted unanimously on December 14, 2005. The resolution extended the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) until June 15, 2006.

Reaffirmation of Previous Resolutions

The Security Council reaffirmed all resolutions related to the situation in Cyprus, particularly Resolution 1251 (1999).

Humanitarian Concerns and Demining Efforts

The Security Council called upon both Cyprus and Northern Cyprus to address the humanitarian issue of missing persons as soon as possible. It welcomed the assessment by Secretary-General Kofi Annan that violence on the island was unlikely and that demining efforts were underway.

Military Exercises and Tension Reduction

Both parties were urged to refrain from actions that would increase tension, particularly in reference to military exercises. The Council expressed its regret at the delay in a political solution.

Construction Activity and Crossing Points

There was also concern about differences in construction activity regarding an additional crossing point in Ledra Street.

Review of UNFICYP Operations

The resolution welcomed the review of operations by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus conducted by the Secretary-General.
