Adoption
United Nations Security Council resolution 534 was adopted unanimously on 15 June 1983.
Report of the Secretary-General
The resolution noted a report by the Secretary-General that, due to existing circumstances, the presence of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) would continue to be essential for a peaceful settlement. The Council expressed its desire for all parties to support the Ten Point Agreement for the resumption of intercommunal talks.
Request for Further Report
The Council asked the Secretary-General to report back again before November 30, 1983, to follow up on the implementation of the resolution.
Reaffirmation of Previous Resolutions
The Council reaffirmed its previous resolutions, including Resolution 365 (1974), which expressed concern over the situation and urged the parties involved to work together for peace. The mandate of the force in Cyprus was extended until December 15, 1983, as specified in Resolution 186 (1964).
