United Nations Security Council Resolution 559
Adoption
Resolution 559 of the United Nations Security Council was adopted unanimously on December 14, 1984.
Background and Content
The resolution referred to a report by the Secretary-General stating that the presence of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) would remain necessary due to current circumstances to achieve a peaceful settlement. The Council expressed its desire for all parties to support the Ten Point Agreement for the resumption of negotiations between the two sides and requested the Secretary-General to submit another report before May 31, 1985, to monitor the implementation of the resolution.
Reaffirmation of Previous Resolutions
The Council reaffirmed its previous resolutions, including Resolution 365 (1974), which expressed concern about the situation and urged the parties involved to work together for peace. It also extended the mandate of the force in Cyprus, as specified in Resolution 186 (1964), until June 15, 1985.
Implementation
The resolution requested the Secretary-General to report back again before May 31, 1985, to follow the implementation of the resolution and monitor its progress.
