Background and Content

The resolution noted a report by the Secretary-General that due to existing circumstances, the presence of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) would remain necessary for achieving a peaceful settlement. The Council reaffirmed its previous resolutions, including Resolution 365 (1974), which expressed concern over the situation, urged the parties involved to work together for peace and extended the mandate of the force in Cyprus. The Council also reaffirmed Resolution 186 (1964), which established the UNFICYP, and extended its stationing until June 15, 1987.
