Elections in 2008

The elections listed here took place in 2008 or were scheduled for the given date. This list includes legislative and presidential elections held in sovereign countries and their autonomous regions, as well as national referendums.

Criteria for Inclusion

Far from all of the 2008 elections listed here were conducted according to internationally recognized democratic standards. Also included are sham elections in dictatorships without alternative candidates or elections, the results of which have come about through massive electoral fraud or without fair, equal access to the mass media by competing candidates or parties.

A rough impression of the significance of the listed elections is given by the adjacent map, which shows in blue those countries that are classified as “electoral democracies” by the organization Freedom House. However, the assessments of Freedom House are not at all undisputed in all cases.
