University of Central Lancashire
History
The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) has its roots in The Institution for the Diffusion Of Useful Knowledge, founded on September 11, 1828, by Joseph Livesey and a group of seven workers from Preston who made a promise to never drink alcohol again. This society was born out of a meeting held at Mr. Smith's Great Room No. 11, Cannon Street, with another gathering taking place at the Municipal Corn Market (now the “Assembly” Bar) on Lune Street on October 7, 1828.
The institution later evolved into Harris Art College and then Preston Polytechnic before becoming Lancashire Polytechnic in 1992. On August 1, 2004, the former Northumbria University in Carlisle was incorporated with approximately 400 students.
