Geography
The river was born on the plateau of Langres, near Poinson-lès-Grancey, in the extreme south of the department of Haute-Marne, at the place The lawn of the source Prevetat, a site classified natural area of ecological, faunistic and floristic interest type I. Another source is quoted on the town of Beneuvre, not far from there, but this time in Côte-d'Or.
The young river flows from an altitude of about , on the western slope of the ridge line from which the Seine and Dawn originate that surround it. Its upper course cuts the hard limestones of the Langres plateau, forming a very steep valley. The river then digs its valley in the Coral coast and descends to its confluence, shortly before Bar-sur-Seine.
At the height of the village of Belan-sur-Ource, Ource pierces the limestone coast of Châtillonnais and offers a picturesque site. The village is surrounded by high rocky escarpments, covered with oak wood and beech trees, while the river, whose course is dotted with islands, is marked by willow and poplar lines. This place is characteristic of the landscapes of the Burgundian highlands, both austere and relaxing.

Alloys
The weakness of the dependent network limits the flow of the river to its confluence with the Seine, the tributaries of the Ource being few and of small length. Downstream, we find:
The Arce () takes birth in Bure-les-Templiers and flows into the Urce at Recey-sur-Ource (left bank).
The Groeme () originates in Terrefondré and flows into the Ource at Recey-sur-Ource (left bank).
The Digeanne () originates in Minot and flows into the Ource at Voulaines-les-Templiers (left bank), it is the longest of the tributaries of the Urce.
The stream of the Ainguets () originates in Courban and flows into the Ource at Belan-sur-Ource (right bank).
The Landion () is born in Cunfin and flows into the Ource at Verpillières-sur-Ource (right bank).
