Varshets

Varsheetz is a town in Northwestern Bulgaria. It is located in Montana region and is near the town of Berkovitsa. The city is the administrative center of Varshets municipality.
Varshets is the oldest spa resort in Bulgaria.

According to GRAO data on 15 September 2023, 5710 people live in the city at the current address and have 6305 residents at the permanent address.

Geography
The town of Varshets is situated at the foot of Mount Todorini dolls, in the northern slopes of Stara Planina Mountain, in the southern part of the great Varshetska valley along the river Botuna.

Varshets is 89 km north of Sofia, 33 km south of Montana district centre, 33 km west of Vratsa and 18,4 km southeast of Berkovitsa.

Its geological and geographical location defines it as an air-conditioned resort known for its warm mineral water and mild mountain climate, creating favourable conditions for effective balneo-climate treatment and prevention.

The average monthly temperature in January is 2.1 °C, in July is 22 °C and the average annual temperature is 11 °C.

The population of the resort village is 5308 people as of 31.12.2022 according to NSI.

The town is situated the second largest of the Balkan Peninsula artificial natural park after Borisova Garden in Sofia. The area of Ivanchova Polyana is situated in the center of the park.

History
Varshets arises around mineral springs and its history is related to balneotherapy. They found ruins of Roman baths. In Turkish documents from the 16th century Varshets existed under the name Virishnice.

The birthday of Varshets resort is considered 1850 when the performer Dimitar Luchkov was cured with mineral water. In 1910 was built the first state mineral bath, whose manager is Dr. Damian Ivanov. It turned out to be narrow for the invading sick and in 1930 it was erected another, larger, which is ancient style and is called Nova Bath. Villas and hotels were built, arranged on both sides of the Alley of the Chinks. In 1934 a solar garden was built in the center of the city. At that time with the advocacy of Damian Ivanov Varshets acquires the largest artificial natural park in Northern Bulgaria It's also a drain.

In the 1930s Varshets is a popular resort among the elites of Bulgaria. The Bansko casino, which is in the center of Varshets, near the old and new bathroom, was built in 1924. It was also called the Royal Casino because it was also visited by Prince Cyril (1895 - 1945). Before World War II, rich Bulgarians and foreigners had fun here. In 1938 at the electrified casino of Varshets was first elected Miss Varshets.

By Decree No 546 of the Presidium of the National Assembly of 7 September 1964. Varshets is declared a city.

Sightseeing

Mineral water comes from several springs with a temperature of about 37 °C. Their water is clear, colourless, soft and poorly mineralized. It is accessible in ayasmo with taps to the center of the resort.
