Government of George Vassiliou (1988-1993)

Background

The Government of George Vassiliou was the 7th government of Cyprus, serving from 28 February 1988 to 28 February 1993. It emerged after the 1988 presidential election, in which George Vassiliou was elected President of the Republic of Cyprus with 51.63% of the vote, succeeding the government of Spiros Kyprianou.

Formation and Composition

The composition of the government was announced on 28 February 1988, and it included eleven ministers. The Cabinet was formed by President George Vassiliou, who claimed the office as an independent candidate. Initially, he had the support of the AKEL party in the first round of the election and the EDEK party in the second round, but neither party participated in governance.

Term

The government remained in power until 28 February 1993, when it was replaced by the cabinet of Glafkos Clerides I. During its term, there were two cabinet reshuffles: on 4 (no specific date mentioned) and on 16 January 1993.
