The Vatican Football Federation (in Italian: Federazione Vaticanese Giuoco Calcio), officially ASD Sport in Vatican, is the football sports federation that runs the Vatican City Football Selection, the Vatican City Women's Football Selection and the country's national football. It was founded in 1972, was affiliated to the NF Board until it ceased to exist and the selection played two VIVA World Cup in 2009 and 2012.
In 2014, the president of the Association, Domenico Rugerio stated: "I prefer to be an amateur... To join FIFA, at that level, it will be like a business" after affirming "The important message of friendship and love is demonstrated by sport - the real sport, not the business that is in football these days... Not only is it fundamental to win a game, it's the way you behave." Therefore, which, he added, meant that "The ethos of the Vatican football team was, in disagreement with the FIFA membership."
"The Pontifical Svizzera Guard" is the official pseudonym given to the sport selection, referring to the Swiss Guard and the pontiffs, a title of certain religious leaders, now used primarily to refer to the Pope. The Vatican is in sixth place on the NF Board's Ranking, exceeding Occitania and being less than North Cyprus.
Tournaments
It organizes the Clericus Cup, an annual football event played by teams of the Roman universities, which are the seminars of the Catholic Church based in Rome. During the fourth season (2010), 16 schools participated in the tournament and aligned players from 65 countries, with the majority coming from Brazil, Italy, Mexico, and the United States. Players are usually seminarians who study to be Catholic priests. A handful of players are ordered priests. The annual tournament is organized by the Italian Sports Centre (CSI). The league was founded in 2007, and the games for the seventh season began in early 2013.
Meanwhile, the Vatican group has played two VIVA World Cup in 2009 and 2012, where in their first participation they reached the 4th place, then they reached the place at the VIVA World Cup in Kurdistan being the best participation of the team in the VIVA World Cup.
