History of Relations

Cyprus was among the 28 European Union member states that did not recognize the results of the elections of the National Constituent Assembly of Venezuela in 2017. Similarly, Cyprus was unaware of the results of the presidential elections in Venezuela in 2018, where Nicolás Maduro was declared a winner.

In response to the 2019 Venezuelan presidential crisis, Cyprus joined the statement of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, which called for an immediate political process leading to credible and free elections. The European Union also fully supported the National Assembly as the democratically elected institution whose powers must be respected and restored.
