Venice Biennale 2003
--- CONTENT ---
The 50th Venice Biennale took place from 15 June to 2 November 2003, with the main theme “Dreams and Conflicts – The Dictatorship of the Viewer”. Under the artistic direction of Florence-born and US-based Francesco Bonami, the exhibition included ten partial exhibitions at Arsenale and Giardini. The partial exhibitions were conceived and conceived by different curators, including two exhibitions by Bonami himself. The Biennial should actually follow on from the Documenta 11 by Okwui Enwezor and also be regarded as a trend-setting one. Francesco Bonami wanted to get rid of the dusty image of the previous biennials by announcing a generational change into the new millennium.
The Venice Biennale 2003 is one of 54 art biennials, international art exhibitions (as of 2014), which take place every two years in Venice since 1895.
Italian Pavilion: “Delays and Revolutions”
With the theme and title: “Delays and Revolutions”, delays and revolutions in German writes in the catalogue Daniel Birnbaum, alongside Francesco Bonami jointly responsible for this exhibition: “Too early, too late”. The temporality of art is never linear. It is characterized by repetition and syncopating, detours and delays. The exhibition finds beautiful evidence for this, but it also sometimes aims completely wrong. One of the works that corresponded particularly well to the theme and completely subordinated itself to the context of the exhibition was the video installation entitled: “Opposing Mirrors” by Dan Graham. Another important feature of the exhibition was the document entitled “L’immagine non riporta la didascalia”, by the Italian artist Massimo Grimaldi on the outside wall of the main pavilion. The textual content of the artwork begins with the sentences “Art survives as caricature”. Their charm lies in their insignificance. Art is not about human expression, but about its conditioning.
