Victoria (philately)
--- CONTENT ---
Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom, is an important figure in philately because her effigy appears on the first postage stamp that was issued in 1840. As head of state of many countries and colonies of the British Empire, she was also the first or first subject on stamps from these regions throughout her reign.
The commemorations of the first stamp, the Penny Black, or the UPU, regularly give rise to stamps with Victoria's effigy.
United Kingdom
The Penny Black in Victoria's profile was the first postage stamp issued. It was the visible part of the postal reform initiated by Rowland Hill.
