Villa Cypris
--- CONTENT ---
The Villa Cypris is a neo-Byzantine style villa with Mediterranean gardens in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin on the French Riviera.
Background
The Villa Cypris (from the Greek Kypris=Cyprus nicknamed the goddess Aphrodite born in the sea near this island), but also homage to the name of the owner Cyprian Dubernet, is a large villa built in 1904 in Cape Martin.
It is inspired by the Byzantine style and that of Monaco Cathedral. It was built for Madame Robert Douine, sponsor and wife of the director of the Louvre department stores in Paris, by architect Édouard Arnaud (1864-1943), architect and also painter Drômois.
The garden was created by landscape architect Raffaële Mainella who also designed the gardens of Villa Torre Clementina. He was a landscape and genre painter born in Benevento, Italy. Since the main construction, the main view leads to a covered colonnade that stands out on the marine background. The garden is also composed of a pergola of sixteen marble pillars supporting brick arches and reminding of a ruined mosque.
This original construction allowed the owner of the premises to follow her daughter, Virginia Heriot sailor in regattas in the bay.
