The club was founded on March 10, 1923, and its first official match was played in October of the same year against Red Star Castellón. Initially, the team played in the Regional Division, where Villarreal FC became a Spanish amateur champion in the 1935/36 season.

Internationally, Villarreal CF has achieved significant success:
