Vitriol is a sulfate compound based on sulfate anions.

ferrous sulphate, also called iron protoxide sulphate, cutose, green cutose, martial vitriol, green vitriol, vitriole mars;
zinc sulphate, also known as white vitriol, white cutose, zinc vitriol, vitriolated zinc;

Vitriol smoking
The , popularly abbreviated in vitriol, corresponds to sulphuric acid. This dense liquid is a strong acid of oily, smoky, very corrosive and aggressive appearance. Sulphuric acid was once called alchemists or old chemists with the terms vitriol oil or sulphur spirit.
Copper, zinc or iron sulphate can be produced in the laboratory by oxidation reaction or respective attack of copper, zinc and iron metals with sulphuric acid.
