Etymology
The name "Vladivostok" is formed from the words "to own" and "East", by analogy with Vladikavkaz (1784).
In Chinese from the Qing era, the name Haishenwei or Haishenwei (/) is common, which means “trepang Bay”. Now in China officially accepted transcription from Russian (Fuladivosytoke), but the name Haishenwai is still widely used. Maps published in Taiwan use only Haishenwai, and maps in China give it in parentheses.
In Japanese, during the Meiji period, a consonant hieroglyphic name was chosen for Vladivostok (urajio, “Salt Bay”). Today, the Japanese mostly write foreign toponyms katakana (Uradziosutoku), and the hieroglyphic spelling is almost non-existent.
