WRC 3: A Support Championship of the World Rally Championship
The WRC 3, also known as FIA WRC3, is a support championship of the World Rally Championship. It was established in 2013 and initially limited to production-based cars homologated under the R1, R2, and R3 rules. The series aimed to provide an entry point for young drivers and teams looking to compete at the top level.
The WRC 3 championship started with seven nominations in its inaugural season, but only six of these were counted towards the overall standings. Over time, the series gained popularity, attracting a growing number of competitors. However, following a review by the FIA, it was announced that the World Rally Championship-3 would be discontinued at the end of 2018.
As part of this decision, all WRC championships became four-wheel drive events except for the Junior WRC championship. The cancellation of WRC 3 led to the introduction of two new championships in support of the main event: one using Group R2 cars and another featuring a mix of production-based vehicles and Group R5 cars.
In its short existence, the WRC 3 provided an opportunity for drivers to gain experience competing against top-level talent. The series also served as a stepping stone for teams looking to move up to the World Rally Championship. Although it is no longer in operation, the legacy of WRC 3 continues to be felt within the world of rallying.
