Biography
He was appointed bishop of Agen on 8 April 1247. He was consecrated bishop by Pope Innocent IV.
Patriarchate of Jerusalem
On 9 December 1262 he was appointed patriarch of Jerusalem holder. It happened to Jacques Pantaleón de Court-Palais, appointed pope and who in turn appointed him for the gerosolomite seat. The papal office concerned both spiritual care and temporal care, with the mandate of the recovery of the local Church's rents. He arrived at the headquarters of San Giovanni d'Acri on 25 September 1263.
Diplomatic mission
In 1263 he was commissioned, through the papal bubble Exultavit cor nostrum of Urban IV, to investigate the legitimacy of a supposed ambassador of the Mongol Empire, John the Hungarian. In front of Urban IV he did not present his credentials, but a letter written by Hulagu Khan on 10 April 262 in Maragheh, date of the Year of the Dog. He had orders to hand it over to King Louis IX of France. According to historian Jean Richard, his editor "had signs of the intervention of a Western scribe, probably a Latin notary of the Ilkhan, such a Ricardo". The letter followed the typical patterns of Mongolian communications; it also referred to gifts received by Ambassador Andrew of Longjumeau, and explained that the Mongols believed that the head of the Christian people was the pope, until "they had proven what was the real power among the French". The letter described earlier campaigns of the Mongols against the Assassins, and suggested an alliance between Mongols and Christians against the common enemy, the Mameluks of Egypt. The document also expressed Hulagu's desire for Jerusalem to return to Christian hands. King Louis sent John, along with a letter from Pope Urban, who probably arrived in Maragha at the end of 1262.
Last years and death
In 1267 he went to Cyprus to crown on December 25, King Ugo III of Lusignano. He remained in office until his death on 21 April 1270.
