Winter Olympics 2006
--CONTENT --
The 20th Winter Olympics are held in Turin, northern Italy from 10 to 26 February 2006. They were the second ones organized in Italy in 1956 in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Eight winter Olympics. And in general this is the third time in the history of this country, when the Olympic Games were organized there - Italy also organized the Summer Olympic Games in Rome in 1960.
During the games, 20,000 volunteers (elected by nearly 40,000 volunteers) were assigned to help athletes, viewers and journalists and prepare the seats for competition.
The game talismans are Neve and Glitz (a female snowball and a male ice cube).
One of the most memorable moments is the heroic performance of Chinese sports couple Zhang Dan and Zhang Hao. Although during the free throw program the contestant falls very painfully, the performance was continued a few minutes later. The judges do not disqualify the couple, but on the contrary they award her a silver medal. The audience accepts the decision with applause.
Choosing a Host
Turin was chosen to organize the 1999 games, defeating Zion in Switzerland with 53 to 36 votes. This happened shortly after the IOC adopted a new method of election during its 108th extraordinary session in connection with corruption scandals around the 1998 and 2002 Olympics elections. After members of the IOC are banned from visiting the city candidates (in the interest of reducing corruption), the 109th IOC Congress appoints a special body of the IOC to elect the finalists from among all candidates after their final presentations at the IOC Congress; after the finalists' cities are elected, only then will the members of the IOC vote. In Seoul, among six applications The College elects only two finalists: Zion (Switzerland) and Turin; they drop Helsinki (Finland), Poprad-Tatras (Slovakia), Digging (Poland) and Klagenfurt (Austria).
Torino's choice of favorite Zion is surprising. According to media claims, his choice is due to four factors: the superior population of Turin (Torino has a population of almost a million people, and Sion 27,000 people), the skills of the negotiating Italian team, the desire of the IOC to compensate for Athens' election to Rome as host of the 2004 summer Olympics, and not least, to return to Switzerland for the exposed role played by IOC member Mark Holder in uncovering the 2002 corruption scandal.
