Wisdom of Myths
--- CONTENT ---
The Wisdom of Myths is a series of French comics on Greek mythology and Mesopotamian mythology created by the philosopher Luc Ferry, written by Clotilde Bruneau and published since 2016 by Glénat. The artistic direction of the collection is ensured by Didier Poli and the drawings are made by various designers.
The collection features ancient heroes such as Jason, Theseus, Heracles, Perseus, Gilgamesh, but also less frequently highlighted characters such as Dédale, Tantalus, Orpheus and Eros as well as great ancient texts such as Iliade and Odyssey of Homer or Oedipus and Antigone of Sophocle.
Luc Ferry wishes with this collection to tell the myths with a rather sustained rhythm of publication. He added to each album eight pages of critical appearance with illustrations.
In particular, the collection evokes fundamental philosophical questions such as the place of man in the universe or the meaning to be given to life. It also frequently evokes the temptation of men to compete with the gods.
The series is quite well received. Critics stress the accuracy of the original texts and the rigour of the reconstruction of ancient monuments. Due to the multiplicity of cartoonists, some albums are graphically less appreciated than others. Some scenarios are also less well evaluated because they lack epic breath.
The Wisdom of Myths is also a success in sales and ranks very regularly in the first fifteen weekly sales in France. The album draws up to .
Background
The intrigues of the series take place mainly in ancient Greece.
