Overview
Wizz Air is a Hungarian low-cost airline operating from its registered office in Vecsés, near Budapest-Ferihegy Airport. The company serves numerous cities throughout Europe, as well as destinations in North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia.
History
Wizz Air was founded in September 2003 and began operations on May 19, 2004, from its base in Katowice, Poland, with a flight to London. The airline's establishment coincided with Poland and Hungary joining the European Union, which led to the implementation of the EU's open skies policy.
Operations
Wizz Air operates from 32 bases across Europe and Asia, including Austria (Vienna International Airport), Italy (Milan-Malpensa Airport, Naples, and Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport in Rome), the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi International Airport), and Israel. The airline's main hub is Luton Airport, which handled 7.4 million passengers in 2018.
Fleet
Wizz Air has a large fleet of aircraft, making it one of the largest Hungarian companies by fleet size. However, it is not a national carrier.
Financials
In February 2015, Wizz Air's shares were listed on the London Stock Exchange.
