Lycurgos Kappas was a Greek Cypriot politician and educator. He served as Minister of Education and Culture of Cyprus as well as Mayor of Lefkonikos.
Biographical data
Lycurgus Kappas was born in Whitehouse in 1928. He studied at the Upper School of Whitehouse. He studied at Morfu Teaching College. He then studied at Clark College England, Southampton University (English literature) and Bristol University.
In 1945 he began working as a teacher in the White House. In 1952-1966 he worked as a professor of mathematics and English at Leukonikou High School. In 1967-1971 he served as assistant director and in 1972-1974 director of Leukonoikos High School. He then served as assistant director at the Stationer’s Company School in London, as inspector of middle education at the Ministry of Education (1977–1988) and as administrative director of Americanos College.
He was married to Stavros Kappa and had three children. He died on 20 May 2014.
Path Policy
In the 1990 municipal election he was elected mayor of Leukonoikos without a candidate. The same was done in the 1995 municipal elections. He did not finish his term as on 1 March 1998 he was appointed Minister of Education and Culture to the government of Glaukos Clerides. He remained in this position until 4 January 1999, when he resigned from the government due to the cancellation of the arrival of the Russian missile system S300 in Cyprus.
