WOLF FLEE (14 AUGUST 1914 – 12 NOVEMBER 2014) WAS AN ISRAELI MACHINE ENGINEER IN A STONE AND LIME INDUSTRY THAT DESIGNED MANY OF ITS INSTALLATIONS. THE TEAM IN ITS HEAD WON THE KAPLAN PRIZE IN 1974 FOR PLANNING AND PERFORMING A STONE AND LIME QUARRY IN THEIR RIOTS.
HIS LIFE IN POLAND BEFORE WORLD WAR II
FLE WAS BORN ON 14 AUGUST 1914 IN THE TOWN OF TURKA, STILL IN THE AUSTRIAN EMPIRE. FLEE WAS ORPHANED FROM A FATHER FROM A YOUNG AGE AND HIS CHILDHOOD DID IN A TOWN THAT WAS PART OF POLAND, FLEM WAS ZIONISTS FROM HIS YOUTH AND WAS A MEMBER OF THE YOUNG GUARD MOVEMENT. ALONG WITH HIS FRIENDS, HE FOUNDED THE LOCAL BRANCH OF THE GODONIA PIONEER MOVEMENT AND SPENT A YEAR TRAINING FOR ISRAEL. IN 1932, FLE GRADUATED FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND WENT TO LAW STUDIES. AFTER A YEAR, HE WENT TO ENGINEERING STUDIES AND GRADUATED IN 1937 AT POLYTECHNIC IN KRAKOW AS MACHINE ENGINEERING.
WORLD WAR II
FLEE WORKED AS A ENGINEER IN KRAKOW JUST A SHORT TIME. ON 31 AUGUST 1939, THE SECOND WORLD WAR BROKE OUT FROM KRAKKOV TO PART OF UKRAINE THAT WAS CONQUERED BY THE RUSSIANS AND FOR ABOUT TWO YEARS WORKED IN BUBOV AS A ENGINEER FOR SOVIET MILITARY PROJECTS. ON JUNE 22, 1941, WITH THE GERMAN INVASION OF UKRAINE AND THE COLLAPSE OF THE TREATY OF REINTROP-MOLOTOV, RECRUITED A PLACE FOR THE RED ARMY RETREATING EASTWARD WHILE FIGHTING THE GERMANS. THE WITHDRAWAL WAS HALTED FOR A CERTAIN PERIOD ON THE BANKS OF THE DANISH RIVER, BUT IN OCTOBER 1941 THE GERMANS WERE ABLE TO CROSS THE RIVER AND THE RED ARMY AGAIN RETREATED. FLE TOOK PART IN HARD BATTLES AT THE SOUTHEASTERN FRONT AND THE REST IN THE HEART, MOST OF US, WIENZA, THE CAPRICORN, ZAMURAGIA, MARAUPOL AND ROSOV ON THE DON. IN JANUARY 1942, HIS UNIT WAS TRANSFERRED TO SVERDELOVSK, WHICH IN CENTRAL RUSSIA AND APRIL OF THE SAME YEAR, WAS STATIONED IN SIBERIA IN THE CORGAN PROVINCE, WHICH WAS A CENTER FOR MILITARY INDUSTRIES THAT WERE TRANSFERRED FROM THE WEST, WHERE HE WORKED UNTIL THE END OF THE WAR AS A ENGINEER.
AFTER THE WAR
IN DECEMBER 1945 HE RECEIVED A VACATION AND WENT HOME TO THE COURT WHERE HE DISCOVERED THAT HIS ENTIRE FAMILY WAS DESTROYED BY THE GERMANS AND UKRAINIANS. FLEM DECIDED TO ARRIVE IN ISRAEL, BEGINNING IN THE WESTERN CAMPAIGN AND IN OCTOBER 1946, HE SAILED TO ISRAEL IN THE BALLOONS TO THE PATRON. THE SHIP WAS CAPTURED BY THE ENGLISH AND ITS PASSENGERS SPENT SEVERAL MONTHS IN CUSTODY IN CYPRUS, IN OCTOBER 1947 AFTER A MONTH IN A PRISON CAMP, HE RECEIVED PERMISSION AND WAS RELEASED TO ISRAEL.
WAR OF LIBERATION
IN JUNE 1947, HE RECEIVED A WORK OF STONE AND LIME, AND IN 1947-1948 HE WAS ABLE TO LEAD THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE QUARRYING QUARRY IN THE LAP, THE LIME FACTORY IN THE DIASPORA AND A QUARANT. ON 21 MARCH 1948, HE TOOK A HOLIDAY DAY AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF A CAR BOMB IN FRONT OF THE “SOUL-BONE” OFFICES ON THE HAIFA PORT. IN APRIL 1948, JOYCE ACCOMPANIED THE IDF AND SERVED AS A FIGHTER IN THE JEEP UNIT OF THE NEGEV ANIMALS IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE 9TH BATTALION OF THE NEGEV BRIGADE. FLE TOOK PART IN BATTLES ON THE NAVA POLICE (IRA SOIDAN) AND OTHER BATTLES IN THE NEGEV.
HIS WORK IN STONE AND LIME
IN 1949, FLEM WAS RELEASED FROM THE ARMY AND RETURNED TO HIS WORK IN STONE AND LIME. THE BUILDING MOMENTUM IN THE YOUNG COUNTRY REQUIRED MANY RAW MATERIALS THAT IT HAD DIFFICULTY PROVIDING ITS OBSOLETE INSTALLATIONS. WITH FUNDING FROM GERMANY’S FINANCES, FLE LED TO THE RENEWAL OF EQUIPMENT AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF STONE AND LIME FACTORIES INTO MODERN FACTORIES THAT COULD WITHSTAND THE MISSION. IN THE 1950S, BERNIKI QUARRIES WERE BUILT IN TIBERIAS, AN ILLUSION QUARRY, A FACTORY IN HAIFA BAY, A FACTORY THAT IS IN THE HOSTEL AND AN EYE TURTLE.
IN THE 1960S, FLE DESIGNED THE CONSTRUCTION OF MODERN QUARRIES AND FACTORIES: IN THE MOUTH, MODERN LIME STOVES WERE ESTABLISHED, THE 4.5 QUARRY NEXT TO HAIFA WAS EXPANDED AND INSTALLED FROM NAZARETH, GOLLINI, THE 19TH MILE IN THE NEGEV, THE CARPENTER AND THE MILL IN THE RAMON CRATER. THE FOREIGN CURRENCY RATE IN THOSE YEARS HAS LED TO THE PURCHASE OF MACHINERY ABROAD, AND THEREFORE MOST OF THE UPGRADES, THE BAKERS AND THE HELICOPTERS WERE BUILT IN DESIGN AND SELF-PERFORMANCE IN THE COMPANY’S WORKSHOPS.
THE 1970S BROUGHT TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS. THE FACTORIES BUILT BY FLORA AND HIS FRIENDS IN THOSE YEARS WERE COLD
