--- CONTENT ---
The qualification matches for the final round of the European Women’s Football Championship 2009 took place between 18 November 2006 and October 2008. 45 of UEFA’s 52 members at the start of qualifying played for eleven places at the Finnish finals. The selection of the host is automatically qualified. For the first time, Azerbaijan, Luxembourg and Macedonia took part in a European Championship qualification. No teams registered from Albania, Andorra, Liechtenstein, Moldova, San Marino and Cyprus, while Montenegro was not a UEFA member at the time of the deadline.
Mode mode
Qualification took place in three rounds. The first qualifying round contested only the 20 weakest national teams. They were divided into five groups of four teams each, who played out five participants in the 2nd qualifying round in mini tournaments.
In the second qualifying round, the five group winners of the first round and the 25 teams made up six groups of five teams each. Within each group, each team played a home game and an away game against each other. The group winners qualified directly for the final round of the European Championship.
In the third qualifying round, the six group runners and the four best group thirds in playoffs determined the remaining five final-round participants. For the calculation of the best group thirds, only the encounters against the first, second and fourth of the respective group were considered.
