Operating system
The 2008–09 first-class championship was attended by 7 teams. It was held in two phases. In the first phase, all teams competed between them twice, once inside and one away.
According to the first phase ranking series, the first seven teams gave each other play off matches to promote the champion. In the first round of the play off the teams competed as follows: 2nd-7th, 3rd-6th and 4th-5th. To qualify for the next round one team of each pair had to achieve 3 wins. The first team in the first phase score did not participate in the first round of play off, passing directly into the second round.
In round II of the play off (final phase) the 1st team faced the couple's winner 4th-5th and the couple's winner 2nd-7th faced the couple's winner 3rd-6th. To qualify for the next round one team of each pair had to achieve 3 wins.
The winners of the two pairs of the semi-final phase competed with each other to promote the champion. To be declared a champion team had to achieve 4 wins. The two losers competed for winning third place. Three wins were required to win the third place.
All the rounds measured the wins the teams had achieved in the first phase of the league. The series of matches of each pair began at the team seat which finished higher at the end of the first phase of the league and continued alternately in the seats of the two teams until the completion of the phase. The defeated teams of the first round of the playoffs were placed in positions 5 – 7 of the final ranking keeping the ranking they had at the end of the first phase of the league. No team was demoted.
Score system
Each win was scored by 2 points and every loss by 1 point.
Classification criteria Phase I
The teams were ranked based on the total number of points they won. In case of a tie in the total number of points won by two or more teams the ranking criteria were:
Higher ranked the team with the greatest difference between the victors and the lost sets.
If the teams had the same difference, the group was ranked higher with the largest fraction resulting from the division of the total winning sets with the total lost sets.
If the tie continued, account was taken of the results of the meetings (in order: points, sets, points).
If the tie continued, higher ranked the team with the largest fraction resulting from dividing the total earned points with the total missed points.
If the tie continued, a ranking race was held on a neutral stadium designated by Cyprus
