The World Cat Federation: A Global Registry for Feline Breeds
The World Cat Federation (WCF) is an international cat registry association of cat clubs, one of the nine members of the World Cat Congress. As a reputable cat registry, it facilitates pedigree registration and cattery name recognition internationally among its affiliated member clubs.
Founded in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 with its headquarters located in Germany, WCF brings together over 540 clubs worldwide, recognizing more than 60 distinct cat breeds. The federation's mission is multifaceted, encompassing the monitoring and registration of breed cats, training feline judges, creating and maintaining breed standards, organizing exhibitions adhering to specific rules, and participating in European Parliament discussions on animal welfare legislation.
WCF member countries include Argentina, Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Belarus, Switzerland, Chile, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Latvia, Monaco, Moldova, Malta, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, United States, and South Africa. In France, an agreement with the Official Book of Feline Origins (LOOF) allows for flexibility in recognizing breeds and judgments.
The WCF is renowned for its comprehensive recognition of cat breeds, with nearly 67 varieties acknowledged, including lesser-known types such as the Mekong bobtail or kanaani. However, about ten breeds have standards recognized by other federations, like the American wirehair or long-haired burmilla. Breeds are categorized based on hair length and oriental type.
WCF delivers three distinct prizes for feline exhibitions, showcasing its commitment to promoting high-quality cat shows and recognizing exceptional felines worldwide.
