"World Corruption Barometer"
--- CONTENT ---
The World Corruption Barometer published by International Transparency is the world's largest research into monitoring public opinion on corruption. It is a survey directed at 114,000 people in 107 countries about their view of corruption.
Did you pay for bribery in 2013?
People in 95 countries responded to the investigation of whether they have bribed a public agency during last year. For a small number of countries, including Brazil and Russia, data on specific issues have been excluded due to concerns about validity and reliability. The margin of error for each country is 3%. The standard sample size is 1,000 people. Four countries - Cyprus, Luxembourg, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands - have a sample size of 500 people and a margin of error 4%.
Unlike the other similar Corruption Perception Index (CPI) published by International Transparency, this is a questionnaire that directly asks the population instead of using "expert perception knowledge", which are subject to substantial prejudice and are under criticism of it. In a 2013 article in Foreign Policy, Alex Cobham argued that CPI incorporates a strong and misleading elite prejudice to popular perceptions of corruption, with potential contribution to a vicious circle and at the same time mobilizes inappropriate political responses. Cobham continues: "the indicator corrupts perceptions to the extent that it is difficult to see an excuse for continuing its publication."
