The Mondial des Cultures (formerly the Drummondville World Folklore Festival) is a festival that showcases the different facets of the world's traditions every summer at Woodyatt Park in Drummondville, a city in the Centre-du-Québec region. This event was founded in 1982 after members of the Mackinaw Folk Ensemble participated in a similar festival in Dijon, France, in 1977.
From 1982 to 2016, the festival spans 11 days. In 2017, he grew to 9 days of festive activity, during which dozens of renowned artists and dancers, singers and musicians from all over the world participated in this event, which in recent years recorded an average of more than 260,000 visits per edition. A macaroon, emblematic of the festival, was designed every year. Michael Deetjens was the poster director of the Macaroon and Festival from 2007 to 2011. The annual budget is C$2.5 million and the economic benefits are estimated at C$16.7 million, according to a 2007 CROP study. Due to such statistics, the World Cultures is one of the world's 4 largest folklore festivals. He is also a leading figure in the Canadian section of the International Council of Folklore and Traditional Arts Festival Organizations (CIOFF), an organization affiliated with UNESCO. In 2018, the 37th edition will not take place due to the financial complications of the event. The city of Drummondville will review the event in 2018 which could lead to the resumption of the event's activities in 2019.
Background
With the support of the Canadian Council for the Popular Arts and the Drummondville Social and Cultural Carrefour, the first edition of the Drummondville World Folklore Festival was launched in . With the spontaneous support of the local population, the success of the event is instant, and the festival quickly becomes a reference in the folk community in Quebec, North America and around the world.
Twenty-seven years later, some 90 countries were represented through the dance and music of more than 430 different companies. In 1998, a turn began with the change of name; in order to modernise the image of the event, but also expand programming and increasingly target young and family clients. Bathing in a sea of summer festivals and attractions of all kinds, the World Cultures has distinguished itself by its content and its product. Member of the REMI (Regroupement des événements majores internationales du Québec) since 1999, the organization has played a key role in the largest events in Quebec.
