World Energy Council
Overview
The World Energy Council (WEC) is a global non-profit organization that serves as the largest international energy forum. Its headquarters are located in London, and it represents the interests of over 3,000 energy organizations from approximately 100 countries through its National Committees.
History
The WEC was founded around 1920 by Daniel Nicol Dunlop with the aim of bringing together specialists worldwide to discuss current and future energy issues and their use. The first national committee was established in 1923, which organized the first World Power Conference (WPC) in 1924 in London. This conference saw participation from 1,700 experts from 40 countries, marking a significant event that led to the creation of a permanent organization, initially named the World Power Conference. Dunlop was elected as its first Secretary General.
Evolution
Over time, the name of the organization underwent changes: it became known as the World Energy Conference in 1968 and eventually adopted its current title, the World Energy Council, in 1992.
Structure and Governance
The WEC is headed by a Secretary General, who reports to the Council of Officers. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman are elected for a term of three years, with any National Committee able to propose candidates. This structure ensures that the organization remains impartial and focused on promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Mission and Objectives
The WEC's mission is to promote the supply and sustainable use of energy for the benefit of all people. It aims to create an affordable, stable, and environmentally sound energy system through its work with leaders and practitioners from around the world.
Recognition and Status
The World Energy Council holds UN-accredited status on energy issues, solidifying its position as a global authority in the field.
Global Presence
Today, the WEC has committees in more than 90 countries, representing over 3,000 energy organizations. This extensive network enables the organization to engage with diverse stakeholders and promote sustainable energy solutions worldwide.
