The World Masters 2021 would have a total of 47. The event will be held for the first time by the World Darts Federation after a one-year break. The tournament was for the period from 2nd to 5th. Scheduled for December 2021 and should take place at De Bonte Wever in Assen, Netherlands.

On September 3, 2021, the WDF announced that the World Masters will be postponed by one year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Before the tournament
Originally, the World Masters was a traditional part of the tournament calendar of the British Darts Organization. However, hosting in 2019 was lined with several eclipses, such as a change in format shortly before the tournament starts and the lineup of non-real players, so the WDF decided to stop recognizing the BDO and its tournaments due to several rule violations during the tournament.

The following year, the BDO World Darts Championship 2020 was the last major tournament hosted by the BDO. With the liquidation of the Darts Association and the additional effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was also clear that no BDO major could be held in 2020.

Already in January 2020, the first intentions of the WDF were made clear to establish its own World Masters. On 18 December 2020, the WDF announced that it would take over the tournament under the name WDF World Masters at the end of 2021. The Dutch Darts Association Nederlandse Darts Bond was to act as a co-organization.

On 3 April 2021, the qualification criteria for the World Masters were announced.
