Xavier Bettel

Xavier Bettel (; born February 1, 1979) is a Luxembourg statesman who is a member of the Democratic Party (DP). He has been Prime Minister of Luxembourg since .
A law graduate in Nancy, he joined the DP at the age of fifteen and chaired the youth organization between 1994 and 2002. In 1999, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies and the communal council of the capital of the Grand Duchy. Following the 2011 local elections, he became 38 years old mayor of Luxembourg. He took office two years later as Chair of the DP.
The early parliamentary elections of 20 October 2013 showed a marked increase in the DP to the detriment of the CSV, and the Liberals began negotiations with the Social Democrats (LSAP) and the Greens (Gréng). Xavier Bettel became Prime Minister and formed an 18-member government, in which he also served as Minister of Cults and Minister of Communication, and whose Conservatives were absent for the first time since 1974. During a ministerial reshuffle orchestrated in , he also became Minister of Culture, a position he left after his reappointment as Prime Minister in 2018.
Biography
Training
He obtained a master's degree in public law and European law, followed by a degree in advanced studies (DEA) in public law and political science at the French University Nancy-II. He gave up his DEA in , after the university concluded a possible plagiarism of his memory. He also participates in the Erasmus programme at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki, where he takes courses in maritime law and ecclesiastical law.
Political career
Quick start
He has been a member of the Democratic Party since 1988 and has been appointed President of the Central Electoral District and National Vice-President of Democratic Liberal Youth (JDL) in 1991. From 1994 to 2002, he served as JDL National President.
Xavier Bettel applied to the parliamentary elections in the constituency Centre and was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. A few months later, during the communal elections of the 17th century, he was elected communal councillor of Luxembourg.
He became a lawyer in 2001 and enrolled in the Luxembourg Bar.
Ascension
In 2004, he ran again in the parliamentary elections 13 June, where he was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. Following the communal elections, he joined the échevinal college of the capital, where he was responsible for social action and youth. He was re-elected in the general elections on 7 June 2009. First on the PNR list for the Centre electoral district, he was appointed Chair of the PNR parliamentary group.
Bourgmaster of Luxembourg
On the occasion of the communal elections of the 17th century, the DP confirmed its majority in relation to the municipal council of Luxembourg, a city which it had governed since 1970, with 33.65 % of the votes, i.e. 10 out of 2 municipal councillors
