Koma tou Gialou/Kumyalı

Koma tou Gialou (Greek: Κομά του Γιαλού), also known as Kumyalı (Turkish: Kumyalı), is a village located in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, situated on the Karpas Peninsula. The village is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus and is part of the İskele District.

History

Prior to 1974, Koma tou Gialou was inhabited exclusively by Greek Cypriots. Following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the village came under the control of Northern Cyprus. In 2011, the village had a population of 686 inhabitants.

Physical Geography

Kumyalı is situated on the Karpas Peninsula, approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Yeni Erenköy. The village's name likely originates from its location near the sea, with "Koma tou Gialou" meaning "village on the sea" in Greek. The Turkish name Kumyalık (also known as Kumyalı) has been in use since the Ottoman period and literally means "residence on the water made of sand".

Near the fishing port, there is a beautiful sandy beach. Several paths lead to an ancient tomb, a cistern, and a small cave.

According to the Statistical Service of Northern Cyprus, in 2011, the village had a population of 686 inhabitants.
