Yamal LNG is a Russian gas production company, created to help develop the north-east of the Yamal Peninsula, and in particular the construction of the liquefied natural gas production station. Owners
Yamal LNG is 50.1 per cent owned by Novatek, 20 per cent owned by TotalEnergies, 20 per cent owned by a subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and 9.9 per cent owned by the Silk Road Fund, a Chinese government investment fund.
In 2010, TotalEnergies had no share in the company, but 25.1% of the shares were owned by the Cypriot company Varix Enterprises, a subsidiary of Gazprombank.
Background
In , Novatek and CNPC signed a cooperation agreement for the Yamal LNG project at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. The agreement contained a long-term contract for delivery to China of a minimum of 3 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year.
In , Novatek and CNPC signed an entry agreement for CNPC in Yamal LNG by purchasing 20% of the shares.
In , the media informed that Novatek planned to keep only a small share in the project (10%), the shares to be shared between a Japanese consortium and Indian companies.
In , TotalEnergies acquired 20% of Yamal LNG's shares.
In , Novatek sold 20% of Yamal LNG's shares to CNDC, a subsidiary of CNPC. The amount of the transaction is confidential, but according to the media, the deals of $1 billion were expected.
The same year the company received the agreement of the natives to settle. Roads across the facilities have been planned for reindeer migration, and hence for the Nénètses.
The gas terminal was inaugurated by Vladimir Putin and Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of TotalEnergys.
Activities
The Yamal LNG project planned to build a liquefied natural gas production station with an official capacity of 16.5 million tonnes per year on the Tambey South gas field. In 2019 it exceeded this number with a balance sheet of 18.4 million. Resources for this gas field are estimated at 907 billion cubic metres.
The first production unit started operating in , and the second in ; a third is put into service in 2019. A fourth production line of nearly 1 million tonnes is under construction in August 2020.
The project is accompanied by the production of 16 LNG tankers with a transport capacity of .
