Tasos Giannitis is a Greek politician, Professor Emeritus of Athens University and former Minister.

Biographical Data
He was born in 1944 in Athens, of origin from Thebes and the area of Nafplio. He graduated from the German School of Athens.

He studied Law and Economic-Politic Sciences at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and then obtained a PhD in Economics from the Free University of Berlin (1974).

Since 1975, he has served as a member of the Department of Economics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, with the knowledge of Economic Development. He served in 2011, when he was awarded the Emeritus Professor title.

He was one of the founding members of the Institute of Mediterranean Studies in Athens, which in the early 1980s presented pioneering work on the role of both European Mediterranean countries and Mediterranean Southern countries.

In December 2009 he resigned as a member of the Board of Journalists Labrakis to take over Chairman of the Board in Greek Petroleum.

On 11 November 2011 he took over as Minister of Interior in the Papademos government , a position he retained until 17 May 2012.

In March 2015 he took over as Chairman of the Board of Directors (non-executive member) of LAMDA Development.

On 6 November 2017, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of the Department of Mediterranean Studies of the University of the Aegean today.

He has received the Grand Cross of the Order of Honor (Italian Republic) 2004, Grand Cross of the Order of Honor (Republic of Chile) 2004, Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III (Cyprus Republic) 2003, Senior Brigadier General of the Order of Merit (Romania) 2003, Gold Daphne Medal (Republic of Bulgaria) 2003.

Political Activity
He was President of the Board of Economic Experts in the Ecumenical government of Zolota. In 1990 he participated as a member of the Angelopoulos Committee for the preparation of “Report on the stabilisation and development of the Greek economy” . In 1993 to 1994 he again took office as Chairman of the Board of Economic Experts, with George Gennimata Minister. He was a financial adviser to Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, in 1994–95, and Costas Simitis, in 1996–2000.

He was successively Minister of Labour and Social Security (2000-2001), Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (2001-2004) and Minister of Foreign Affairs (February-March 2004) in the Government of PASOK with Kostas Simitis as Prime Minister.
