Early Life and Education

Yiannakis Matsis was born on 24 October 1933 in Paleochori Morfu, Cyprus. He studied law and is a businessman.

Personal Life

Matsis is married to Argyrula Charalambous and has two children, a son and a daughter. His brother, Kyriakos Matsis, was an EOKA fighter.

Political Career

### Member of Parliament (1981-2001)

Matsis was first elected as a Member of Parliament in the 1981 Parliamentary elections in the Lefkosia Electoral District with the Democratic Rally party for the Fourth Parliamentary Period. He was re-elected in the 1985 Parliamentary elections for the Fifth Parliamentary Period, and again in the 1991 parliamentary election with the Democratic Alarm-Communist Liberal coalition for the Sixth Parliamentary Period. He was also re-elected in the 1996 parliamentary election for the Seventh Parliamentary Period.

### President of DISY (1993-1997)

In 1993, Matsis was elected as the President of the Democratic Rally party, following the resignation of Glavkos Clerides.

### Member of the European Parliament (2004-2009)

Matsis served as a Member of the European Parliament from 14 June 2004 to June 2009. He did not stand for re-election in the 2009 European elections.
