Yiannakis Omirou

Yiannakis Omirou (; born 18 September 1951) is a Greek-Cypriot politician.

Early Life and Education

Omirou was born in Paphos, Cyprus. He studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

Career

During his studies in Athens, he participated in the occupation of the Athens Law School and in the uprising of the Polytechnic. He was an active member of the resistance movement against the 1974 coup d'état.

He worked as a lawyer and editor/announcer for Free Radio Paphos during the July 15, 1974 coup d'état. He was arrested and imprisoned by the coup d'états.

Omirou was first elected MP in the 1981 parliamentary elections in the Paphos Electoral District with the EDEK party for the Fourth Parliamentary Period. He was re-elected in the 1985 parliamentary elections for the Fifth Parliamentary Period, the 1991 parliamentary elections for the Sixth Parliamentary Period and the 1996 parliamentary elections.

Leadership Roles

He served as President of the House of Representatives, Minister of Defence, and President of the Social Democrats-EDEK Movement. Omirou was also a leader of the political party EDEK between 2001 and 2015.

Presidency of the Cypriot Parliament

Omirou was president of the Cypriot parliament from 2011 to 2016.

He is single and speaks English fluently.
