Yiannis Tomaras: A Notable Greek Footballer
Yiannis Tomaras, born on March 16, 1947, is a former Greek football player who excelled in the latter half of the 1960s and early 1970s. As a right rear defender for Panathinaikos FC from 1968 to 1974, he played a crucial role in the team's success during this period.
Tomasaras was part of the Panathinaikos squad that won three consecutive Greek championships under his tenure. Additionally, he contributed to the club's victory in the Greek Cup, further solidifying his reputation as an integral member of the team. One notable achievement from this era is Tomaras' participation in the 1971 Champions Club Cup final against Ajax Amsterdam, where Panathinaikos ultimately lost with a score of 0-2.
Injuries marred Tomaras' career, particularly during the 1971 Intercontinental Cup match against Nacional de Portugal. Suffering severe injuries to his foot, including double fractures, forced him to withdraw from competition and return to Greece for recovery.
Following his stint at Panathinaikos, Tomaras played under Ífaistos Peristeriou from 1978 to 1980. In European competitions, he accumulated a total of 11 appearances in the Champions Club Cup without scoring any goals.
Tomasaras also represented the Greek national team on three occasions between 1970 and 1971, earning friendly selections against West Germany, Cyprus, and Mexico. His first match was played against West Germany with a score of 1-3 in Piraeus, while his second game saw him draw 1-1 against Cyprus in Piraeus. Unfortunately, his final international appearance ended in defeat to Mexico with a score of 0-1 in Thessaloniki.
Throughout his career, Tomaras demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication as a footballer, leaving an indelible mark on the sport in Greece during that era.
