Giannos Ioannou: The "Mr. Goal" of Cypriot Football

Giannos Ioannou, affectionately known as the "Mr. Goal", is a veteran Cypriot footballer widely regarded as one of the most successful strikers in Cyprus. Born on January 25, 1966, in Nicosia, Ioannou's illustrious career spanned over two decades, with his playing days divided between APOEL and the Cypriot national team.

Ioannou began his professional football journey at Apoll, a club he would later represent for several years. However, it was during his time at APOEL that he achieved most of his success, winning four Cyprus championships in 1986, 1990, 1992, and 1996. He also claimed six Cypriot Cup titles in 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and two Super Cups in 1984 and 1986.

One of Ioannou's most notable achievements was his status as the top scorer in Cyprus during the 1985-86 season, with an impressive 22 goals. This feat earned him a reputation as one of the country's greatest strikers, solidifying his nickname "Mr. Goal". His exceptional goal-scoring record also led to numerous individual accolades, including being named Head of the Cypriot Championship in 1986.

Ioannou's success on the domestic stage was matched by his achievements at the international level. He earned 43 caps for the Cyprus national team between 1986 and 1999, scoring six goals in the process. His most notable international performance came during a Euro 1988 playoff match against Greece, although he ultimately lost to Paníkos Iakóvou's side.

Throughout his career, Ioannou played an impressive 504 games for APOEL Nicosia, netting 264 goals and cementing his place as the club's all-time leading scorer. His dedication and skill on the pitch have left a lasting legacy in Cypriot football, with many regarding him as one of the country's greatest players of all time.
