Yongchuan International Tournament
International Yongchuan Tournament
The International Yongchuan Tournament is an annual, invitational women's football tournament that originated from the Women's Four Nations Tournament. It takes place annually in October in the Yongchuan area of Chongqing, China.
History of the tournament began with the Four Nations Tournament held annually in Guangzhou before 2010. When Guangzhou withdrew as host due to the celebration of the 2010 Asian Games, an agreement was reached for the Yongchuan area in Chongqing to take over hosting directly from the Chinese Football Association (CFA). The tournament was hosted between January 2011 and January 2014. In 2015, with better preparation for the 2015 Women's World Cup in mind, the CFA transferred the tournament to Shenzhen City in southern China, which was closer to the winter training base of the Chinese women's national football team in Guangzhou. The International Yongchuan Tournament was designated as a replacement, and England and Australia were invited to the inaugural edition in October 2015.
The tournament has undergone several format changes since its inception. Initially hosted by Yongchuan between January 2011 and January 2014, it later moved to Shenzhen City in 2015 due to improved logistical arrangements for the Chinese women's national team. The change was made to facilitate better preparation for international competitions like the Women's World Cup.
The International Yongchuan Tournament has been a part of various international football competitions hosted by China, including the Algarve Cup and the Turkish Women's Cup. It is also linked to other prominent tournaments such as the Cyprus Women's Cup and the SheBelieves Cup. The tournament continues to be an important platform for national teams from around the world to compete in a high-level invitational setting.
The International Yongchuan Tournament has seen several notable achievements, including top scorer awards and recognition within the international women's football community.
