The Youth of Democratic Alarm (NE.DI.S.) is the youth organization of the Democratic Alert.
Background
The Youth of Democratic Alarm was established in 1978, two years after the establishment of the Democratic Alarm, with Manolis Christofidis as the primary pioneer, housing Greek Cypriot national-voiced and democratic youth of the time. From 1978 until today NEDI SY. had an active role and participation in all the campaign campaigns of the DI.SY.
According to the statutes of the DI.SY. the Youth of the Democratic Alarm is part and part of the party, is involved by its principles and ideology and follows its policy and programme. It thus participates in all collective bodies of the DI.S.S. except the Ethics Committee and the Committee on Institutions and Transparency.
Main part of NEDI.SY. are, according to its charter, the Student Movement and the Student Group of Cypriot Pioneers, founded in 1981.
In 1987 NEDI executives proceeded to create the Organization of New Scientists of DI.SY. In 2010 the O.N.E. following statutory amendments, both by NE.D.S.Y. and by the DI.S.Y., was autonomous from the youth and since then operates as a party-related organization.
In the four years 1989-1993 Tasos Mitsopoulos served as Vice-President and Secretary-General of the Youth of the European People's Party.
Since the early 2000s and after the election of Glaukos Clerides in the presidency of the Republic of Cyprus, NE.DI.SY. and PPC Innovation differed with their official positions their attitude and positions from extreme and nationalist approaches to the Cyprus issue, coming to a break with the anti-federal space.
In 2004, NEDI SY, chaired by Thanasis Tsokko and Secretary General Dimitris Pitsillis despite disagreements at the party base, followed the decision of the leadership of DI.SY. and advocated the support of Plan Annan in the 2004 referendum. So did the PPC Innovation through the then Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Party, Charalambos Stavridis. The "no" was supported by the local committees of the PPC Innovation Patras and the United Kingdom.
After Tasos Mitsopoulos, in 2011 the then President of NE.DI.SY., Charalambos Stavridis, became the second Cypriot elected to the position of Vice President of the Youth of the European People's Party, while in May 2013 Christodoulos Ioannis, then a member of the Secretariat of International Relations of the NEDI.SY, was also elected as Vice President of the Youth of the European People's Party.
Since 1981, NEDISY has participated in the Organization of European Democratic Students (EDS), the Student Youth of the European People's Party. Since then several NEDISY officials held the position of EDS Vice President. Alexander Sinka became the first Cypriot to serve as President of EDS from 2003–2005.
