Yuri Ivanovich Filippov

Yuri Ivanovich Filippov is a Soviet and Ukrainian volleyball player and coach.

Coaching Career

During his career, Filippov coached several teams, including Kharkiv Lokomotiv, Cyprus Apoel, the national team of Ukraine, and the Russian club Dagestan. As a coach, he achieved notable success, winning two championships in Ukraine, three Cups of Ukraine, one Cup of Cyprus, and one Super Cup of Cyprus.

In the 2018/19 season, Filippov coached Yaroslavich, but left the team in January after it was in 14th place with only one win out of 16 matches. He then took over PAOK, leading them to a Greek Cup victory and a silver medal in the national championship.

In December 2019, Filippov became the head coach of Nova, replacing Alexander Gorbatkov. Under his leadership, the team won three out of 11 matches but remained in last place in the standings.

Playing Career

Filippov was born in Luhansk, Ukraine. He began playing volleyball at the age of 12 and participated in the First National Championship of Ukraine at 16. His position on the court was diagonal.

At 22, Filippov moved to Greece to compete for Shipyards and later joined Ionian New Philadelphia. In 1993, he transferred to Panathinaikos, where he played for five years until 1998. During this time, he won two Greek Championships (1995, 1996) and was the leading foreign volleyball player in the Greek league in 1996.

Filippov then competed in Brazil with Susanna's team before returning to Greece to play for AEK from 1999 to 2002. In 2003, he played for Locomotive Harikov in Ukraine, winning two championships and the Top Teams Cup. He was also the first scorer of the Cup winners' Cup in 2004.

Achievements

Throughout his career, Filippov won six championships, six cups, and one Top Teams Cup. In 1989, he became a world champion with the Soviet national team at the age of 22.
