Yuri Gagarin

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin (; 9 March 1934 – 27 March 1968) was a Soviet pilot and cosmonaut who became the first person to travel into outer space during the first successful crewed spaceflight.

Early Life and Education

Gagarin was born in the village of Klushino, near Gzhatsk (now in Gagarinski region, Smolensk region, Russia). His family belonged to a collective farm, where his father worked as a carpenter. After the German occupation during World War II, the family suffered greatly, and many believed that their two older children were dead.

Gagarin's mother was hospitalized after being slashed by a scythe wielded by a soldier. Gagarin's father was overcome with grief and hunger, often sickly. The family moved to Gzhatsk in 1946, where Gagarin continued his education at a crude school built in the town.

Military Service

Gagarin joined the Soviet Air Force as a pilot and was assigned to the Luostari air base, near the border with Norway. He later became a war pilot of the 112th grade. In 1951, he graduated from the I. Čkalovskoe school of aviation in Orenburg.

Spaceflight

On April 12, 1961, Gagarin became the first person in world history to fly into outer space. He completed an orbit of the Earth on board the Vostok-1 spacecraft. The flight lasted for approximately 108 minutes.

Career and Awards

Gagarin was awarded numerous medals and titles, including that of Hero of the Soviet Union, the largest decoration in his country. He became an international celebrity and was honored with many awards, including the title of Honored Master of Sports of the USSR (1961).

Death

Gagarin died on March 27, 1968, at the age of 34, while piloting a MiG-15 training jet. The cause of death is still disputed.

Yuri Gagarin's achievement marked an important milestone in the space race and paved the way for future space exploration. He remains one of the most famous astronauts in history, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of scientists and explorers.

Personal Life

Gagarin was married to Anna Timofeyevna Gagarina, a dairy farmer. They had two children, Zoya and Boris.
