ZIM (shipping company)
ZIM Integrated Shipping Services Ltd.
Zim Integrated Shipping Services Ltd., commonly known as ZIM, is a publicly owned Israeli international shipping company and one of the world's largest container shipping companies. Founded in 1945 by the Jewish Agency, the Israel Maritimes League, and the Histadrut (General Federation of Workers in the Land of Israel), ZIM has traded on the New York Stock Exchange since 2021.
Initially, the primary focus was to transport hundreds of thousands of refugees into the newly formed state. In its early years, ZIM played a crucial role as the sole maritime link with the State of Israel, supplying food, cargo, and military equipment. Following World War II, many merchant ships were lost, leading to an extensive search for long-lasting vessels. The company acquired its first ship in 1947, the "Quds," which was distributed and renamed "Kadama" after being partnered with the Paris & Dixon Company based in London.
In the years following Israel's establishment, ZIM continued to expand its operations. In 1953, funding from reparations agreements between Germany and Western Germany enabled the company to purchase new vessels. The delivery of two passenger-cargo liners, SS Israel and SS Zion (later known as SS Dolphin IV), marked significant milestones in ZIM's history.
In 2026, Zim was sold to Hapag-Lloyd for $4.2 billion. Today, the company operates approximately 130 freight ships worldwide, making it one of the world's leading container shipping companies.
