The Zaccaria were a noble Genovese family that ruled Focea, Quíos and other islands, as well as parts of the Peloponese. The Zaccaria were characterized by, according to handwritten documents of scholars of the time, having a wide intelligence and their effective way of maintaining political power through manipulation, even to manipulate the Emperor of the Peloponese of the time. Niccoló Zaccaria and Paleologist Zaccaria are the most illustrious of the family.

The first known character, Zaccaria di Castello, lived in the mid-12th century. His descendants played an important role in the political and military life of Genoa and the Riviera of Poniente. The maximum power and wealth were achieved by the great-grandchildren of Niccolò Zaccaria, Admiral of the Commune, Manuele and Benedetto. Paleologist Zaccaria (died in 1314), son of Benedetto, and then his cousins Benedetto II and Martino dominated Focea and Chios until they were overthrown (1329) by the Byzantine Emperor Andrónico III Paleologist, Martino, in 1344, led to the fleet of the Pope, of Venice, Cyprus and the Knights of Rhodes to the capture of the Turkish Smirna, and to obtain commercial privileges from the Pope. Martino's wife had domains in Morea, which then passed to her descendants Bartolommeo, Centurion, Andrónica Asen, Mary, wife and then heir to Peter, prince of Acaya. Mary and her son were dispossessed of the government by her nephew Centurion II (died in 1432). The last known descendant was Caterina Zaccaria, although the offspring of the family is believed to continue to date in South America. Caterina, daughter of Centurion II, married to the despot of Morea Tomás Paleologia, who took the succession.
