Zacharias Topelius
--- CONTENT--
Journalist and professor of history, Topelius discussed, along with Runeberg and Lonnrot, the conservation and dissemination of Finnish national cultural heritage.
In nineteenth-century Finland, bilingual and dominated by the nationalistic-Romanian current, Topelius published collections of romantic operas, in harmonious and ductile verses, perhaps the most musical that have ever been written in Swedish.
With Tales of a military doctor, from 1853 to 1867, he set himself in the wake of Runeberg in order to give the Finnish people a historical tradition. Very well-known and widespread are his Fairytales, period 1847-1852 and Readings for children, 1865-1896; he is also author of the Christmas song Nu så kommer julen.
