### Geography and Administration

Zakynthos is a city and the capital of the homonymous island in Greece. It is also the administrative seat of the municipal unit, the municipality, and the peripheral unit of Zakynthos. The city is located to the east of the island off the Peloponese coast, extending between the port and the Bochali hill.

The city unit of Zakynthos includes the homonymous city and the Strophades Islands. It is the only municipality in Greece that corresponds to a peripheral unit, as per the latest administrative reform. The municipal unit has a land area of 405,600 m², which corresponds to 17.58% of the area of the region.

### Population

As of the 2011 census, the population of Zakynthos is 9,772, making it the second largest city in the Ionian Islands. The municipal unit has a total population of 16,810, with the following communities:

* Argasi (1,266)
* Vasilikos (799)
* Gaitani (1,899)
* Bochali (1,143)

### Toponymy

The name "Zakynthos" comes from the first inhabitant of the island, Zacinto, son of Dárdano, who arrived in 1600 BC. This event is described by Homer. The city is also known as Chora (in Greek, namely, "the country").

### Tourism

While Zakynthos City itself does not host many resorts, it attracts tourists from across the island for its scenic beauty and historic significance.
