Association
Prokeš started playing football at Igla České Budějovice at the age of 10. In the 1971/72 season, the defender with his team became Czech junior champion and after a 3:3 and 0:1 in the final against Slovan Bratislava Czechoslovak vice champion. In the 1972/73 and 1973/74 seasons, he played in the B team in the third highest class (Národní fotbalová liga), which was first trained by Václav Pavlis and then by Josef Masopust.

After two years of military service, the talented defensive player had offers from Sparta Prague, Slavia Prague and Sklo Union Teplice, but ultimately chose Bohemians Prague because he expected regular deployment times. With Bohemians he quickly became a root force and developed from 1977 to the national player. In 294 games for Bohemians in the 1st Czechoslovak League, Prokeš scored 17 goals.

At the age of 32, he was allowed to move abroad under the rules of the communist regime in force at the time and decided on the present offers of VSE St. Pölten, a French second division team and the TSV 1860 Munich for the then Bayernliga team.

In the 1985/86 season, the Munich lions were trained by Václav Halama and in addition to Prokeš, his compatriots goalkeepers Jaroslav Netolička and Miroslav Gerhat belonged to the squad. In 30 games, Prokeš, who had previously finished his national team career, scored seven goals. The TSV 1860 failed in the promotion delegation to the 2nd Bundesliga. Also in the following season 1986/87 he was with 36 appearances and 11 goals a stable size in the team, which missed the climb again. The 1987/88 season was the last in the career of Zdeněk Prokeš. He completed 13 round trips (1 goal), but then stopped because of persistent knee problems. For the TSV 1860 Munich Prokeš scored 18 goals in 77 league appearances.

Prokeš returned to Prague at the beginning of 1988 and kept fit with Bohemians, even came in a test match, but then decided to finally finish his career.
