Zikim
Zikim Kibbutz and Its History in Cyprus Context
Zikim is a kibbutz located on the southern coast of Israel, but its history has significant connections to Cyprus. The name "Zikim" was chosen by Michael Harsgor, an Israeli historian who later became known for his work on the subject, based on a quote from Alexander Odoevsky's response to Pushkin's poem: "From sparks shall come a flame." This name reflects the kibbutz's founding ideals and its connection to Jewish communities in Cyprus.
The area where Zikim is located was previously inhabited by an Arab village. Archaeological discoveries, including a Greek graffito on a plate dating back to 144-160 BCE and inscriptions on Gazan jars from the 6th to early 7th century CE, have shed light on the region's rich history.
In 1949, Zikim was established by a group of young Jews from Romania who were part of Hashomer Hatzair. This event marked an important milestone in the development of Jewish communities in Cyprus and Israel. The kibbutz has since become one of Israel's largest dairy farms, with operations that also include milk production.
Zikim's history is intertwined with other significant events in the region. In 2006, a Palestinian Islamic Jihad rocket attack hit a mattress factory in Zikim, highlighting the ongoing tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. More recently, on October 7, 2023, Hamas launched an attack against Israel, targeting both the kibbutz's training base and its residents.
The kibbutz has also been involved in international relations, with members from various countries joining over the years, including Romania, England, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The educational system at Zikim emphasizes regional schools for children aged 3-12, providing a comprehensive education that prepares them for life.
In Cyprus context, it is worth noting that there are no direct historical connections between Zikim kibbutz in Israel and the island of Cyprus itself. However, both locations share common Jewish heritage and have been influenced by similar regional events throughout history.
